Fourth in the overall ranking, eighth position in the team time race, just 28” behind CCC Sprandii from Poland, Niccolò Gaffurini tenth in the overall individual ranking and first among the Italians, three of the five stages completed in the top ten positions.
First competition for the 911 Team Edition, the specialised bike for time attack derived from the 911 TT.
These are the results of the Team Continental Sangemini – Mg.K Vis – Olmo at the 2017 edition of the Coppi and Bartali International Week, one of the major scheduled events in the UCI Europe Tour class 2.1, which for its 2017 edition featured 196 contestants cycling for 25 teams, including front runners among World Tour teams such as Cannondale Drapac, Sky and Dimension Data.
The week proceeded in a crescendo, with solid and convincing performances from the cyclists selected by the Team Manager Angelo Baldini, after a great start in the eights position, second among Italians, in the team time race on Thursday 23 March. The team consisting of Nicola Gaffurini, Michele Gazzarra, Davide Orrico and Paolo Totò reached the finish line, at the end of the 13.3 kilometres from Gatteo a Mare to Gatteo – just behind the Professional Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec team – in 15’25” cycling at an average of more than 51 km/h on Olmo 911TE bicycles, the specialised weapon for time attack available to the team, a by-product of the standard 911 TT.
On day two – 130 km between Riccione and Sogliano sul Rubicone with two GPMs in the first half of the stage and an average slope of 7% with peaks up to 16% in the three rounds of the final circuit at Le Ville di Monte Tiffi, the team did remarkably well, with Gaffurini in 14th position, reaching the finish line 1:14 behind the winner of this stage, Skuijins from Latvia, as well as Michele Gazzara and Davide Orrico in top-ranking positions.
The fourth stage, with Crevalcore in the Bologna area as starting and arrival point, and competition ground for the cyclists, marked the turning point of the team’s participation in the 2017 Coppi and Bartali Week, with an exciting performance by Niccolò Salvietti, the only Italian in the group of 21 cyclists leading the race for most of this stage and ninth at the finish line.
The excellent performance of the whole team was crowned by the final stage, 160 km between Fiorano Modenese and Sassuolo on two circuits with four GPMs on the Valico di Fazzano (2 km with slopes between 16 and 18%), where Gaffurini was one of the protagonist in the final rush: fifth at the finish and tenth in the overall ranking, the first Italian in the general ranking, a little over two minutes behind the ranking leader, Calmejane from France.
Apart from its excellent individual results, the Coppi and Bartali Week has been a show of great strength and determination for the whole team, which has progressed from being the neglected Cinderella in the circuit to crowning glory as first Continental team, fourth in the overall ranking just behind team Sky.
The stages along the route, alternating medium-fast stretches and Gran Premi della Montagna with double-digit slopes, have confirmed the outstanding flexibility and efficiency traits of Zerouno Team Edition, available in dual race replica set-up from all Olmo authorised dealers.
